Have you ever sat around a campfire and swapped ghost stories? I sometimes wonder if the followers of Jesus ever did that. After a long day of ministry, when the disciples were unwinding from the work and eating around their campfire, what did they talk about? Based on some of their experiences, I find it possible that ghost stories were on the table.

There's an interesting scene in the Bible where the disciples of Jesus are out on a boat at night in the middle of a storm (Matthew 14:23-25). All the ingredients for a frightful scene are here. While this situation is already terrifying, imagine how much more fearful they became when they looked out from the boat and saw a figure walking on the water (Matthew 14:25-26). That figure? Jesus, but in that moment of terror the only words they could find to say were: "It is a ghost!" (Matthew 14:26).

There are many things in this world that can cause us to be afraid. We might be afraid of what will happen to our kids, our jobs, or our finances. We might be afraid of plans falling apart or of future worries eventually coming to pass. Fear is a very real struggle for many of us. In those moments of fear, it's important that we remember how this 'ghost story' of the disciples ends: "But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid" (Matthew 14:27)

What are you afraid of? Take it to Jesus, and in Him, find peace.
"There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.
For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. "
1 John 4:18
