An Insider's View of Mormon Origins. Grant Palmer, Signature Books, 2002. Palmer is a Latter-day-saint and a three time director of the LDS Institutes of Religion in California and Utah. His book is a good starting place for differences in the original stories of Joseph Smith and the current stories. Also he looks at Smith's ability as a translator based on documents Smith said he translated.
Losing a Lost Tribe. Simon Southerton, Signature Books, 2004. Southerton is an Australian who served his "mission" for the LDS in Melbourne, Australia. His work in DNA research caused him to leave the LDS and write this book.
...By His Own Hand On Papyrus. Charles M. Larson, Institute For Religious Research, 1985. Larson provides copies of the Book of Abraham papyrus and several facsimiles that are included in the Pearl of Great Price. The Book of Abraham is considered an inspired work by the LDS, but not by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints.
Joseph Smith Begins His Work Volumes 1 and 2. Volume 1 is a copy of the original Book of Mormon. Volume 2 is a copy of the Book of Commandments and an early copy of the Doctrines and Covenants. Both of these volumes allow you to see the many changes that have been made in the originals and the current Book of Mormon and Doctrines and Covenants.
Mormonism 101. Bill McKeever and Eric Johnson, Baker Books, 2000. This book examines the LDS view of the doctrine of God, scripture, salvation and other topics.
No Man Knows My History. Fawn Brodie wrote this book from a statement Joseph Smith made in one of his last speeches he gave before his death. She searched court records, temple records and old newspapers to find the history of Joseph Smith's. This is a fascinating book about the founder and prophet of the LDS.

Jerald is the great-great-grandson of John Tanner, who contributed considerable funds to Joseph Smith when the church was deeply in debt in 1835. Sandra is the great-great-granddaughter of Brigham Young, the second president of the LDS church. They have written numerous books about the changes in doctrine, changes in the Book of Mormon and Doctrines and Covenants and the various accounts of the First vision of Joseph Smith.

Her book, Mormon Mirage, that was written in 1979 is on this site. This is an interesting and helpful book on a variety of topics. She gives her thoughts on what the Bible says in regard to these various topics.
